St. John Stroke Director Recognized with National Stroke Award

Dr. Anna Wanahita honored with Power to End Stroke award from American Heart Association/American Stroke Association

Dr. Anna Wanahita, St. John Stroke Center co-medical director, recently received a national Power to End Stroke (PTES) award at the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) Power Awards. The event was held at the Apollo Theater, New York City.

Dr. Wanahita was honored for her efforts as a PTES ambassador raising stroke awareness throughout the community. Dr. Wanahita serves as an ambassador for the South Central Affiliate (SCA), which led the nation in PTES outreach in the African American communities. She was one of 11 people nationwide to receive the award.

The PTES program was created in 2006 by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to reduce stroke and risk of stroke by 25 percent by 2010. It was also meant to raise critical awareness within the African-American population.

According to AHA/ASA, stroke is the number three killer and leading cause of disability for all Americans, and African Americans are at an even higher risk. African Americans have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes compared to Caucasians, as well as higher death rates. The prevalence of high blood pressure among African Americans in the United States is the highest in the world.

PTES goals are measured in terms of the number of people reached, pledge card collection, recruitment of ambassadors, especially leaders in the community, and also the communities’ participation in PTES-related activities.

“I truly value the fact that St. John’s philosophy does not confine stroke care within the four walls of a state-of-the art stroke center facility, but recognizes the significance of community outreach.” said Nancy Grayson, AHA/ASA senior director of cultural health initiatives. “I appreciate Dr. Wanahita and the St. John Stroke Center team’s commitment to stroke prevention, treatment and education.”
