St. John Becomes Oklahoma’s Only MD Anderson Cancer Network® Affiliate

TULSA, Okla., July 1, 2014 — St. John Medical Center formally announced today that it is the first and only hospital in Oklahoma to become a certified member of MD Anderson Cancer Network®, a nationwide program of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The locally exclusive affiliation brings MD Anderson’s cancer care expertise to St. John patients throughout Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and parts of Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. MD Anderson has been ranked for 10 of the last 12 years as the No. 1 cancer care provider in the “Best Hospitals” survey published by U.S. News & World Report.

As a part of the affiliation, St. John utilizes MD Anderson’s renowned, evidence-based treatment plans and clinical guidelines. St. John certified physicians have the ability to access a wide range of multidisciplinary educational opportunities, including disease-specific guidelines, peer-to-peer consultations, treatment plans and best practices developed by MD Anderson experts. Patients receive St. John’s same quality, compassionate care at a local level, combined with the latest treatment protocols developed by the nation's leading cancer fighting center.

“St. John is honored to be a part of this select group of hospitals and healthcare systems nationwide,” said David Pynn, president and CEO of St. John Health System. “The collaboration is a tremendous development in our oncology program that enables us to successfully expand our state-of-the-art services for cancer patients in Oklahoma and surrounding areas. We hope our announcement today represents new hope for cancer patients.”

St. John officially became one of only 13 certified members of the network effective June 1 following an extensive evaluation process to ensure the highest standards for clinical quality, safety and patient care. Associated St. John physicians were also evaluated and certified by the network.

To be considered as an MD Anderson Cancer Network certified member, St. John was required to meet clinical requirements, including Joint Commission and Commission on Cancer accreditation, and to be able to organize their oncologic specialty physicians according to MD Anderson’s multidisciplinary model. St. John also underwent clinical practice reviews and rigorous onsite evaluations of its medical oncology program, surgery, diagnostic imaging, and inpatient and outpatient pharmacy as a part of the evaluation process.

“Respected community healthcare providers like St. John are vital to MD Anderson’s ability to disseminate our knowledge and expertise through our growing network,” said Thomas Burke, M.D., executive vice president for MD Anderson Cancer Network. “Together, we’ll ensure that patients in Oklahoma and the region have access to MD Anderson-quality care close to home.”
