St. John Owasso named one of the nation’s Top 100 Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics

OWASSO, Okla. (March 22, 2017) – St. John Owasso is the only hospital in Oklahoma to be named a Truven Health Top 100 Hospital.  Winners were announced March 6 when Truven Health Analytics®, part of the IBM Watson Health™ business, released its annual study identifying the 100 Top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance.

“This national award recognizes our nurses, associates and physicians for the quality of care they provide to our patients,” said David Phillips, St. John Owasso president and chief operating officer.

The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals is a comprehensive, academically driven study that evaluates clinical and operational performance in 11 areas: inpatient mortality; 30-day mortality rate; complications; core measures; 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate; severity-adjusted average length of stay; mean emergency room throughput; inpatient expense per discharge; Medicare spend per beneficiary; adjusted operating profit margin; and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

“Our focus is always on the patients, so the fact that this national organization affirms the outcome of our work is rewarding,” said Tim Hepner, MD, St. John Owasso chief medical officer.

To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers evaluated 2,740 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information — Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. St. John Owasso was measured against 826 other U.S. hospitals as part of the small community hospital category (25 to 99 beds).  Hospitals do not apply for awards, and winners do not pay to market this honor. “Every associate and caregiver in our facility played an essential role in helping us achieve this remarkable honor,” said Dan Hall, RN, St. John Owasso chief nursing officer.  “It is our privilege to serve our patients and our community.”
