Emergency care for brain and spine injuries

In an emergency, our care teams deliver prompt care for brain and spinal cord injuries and other neurologic disorders. And because we’re more than emergency care, we connect our patients to the right specialist for follow-up care.

When a condition is life-threatening, our neurosurgeons at Ascension hospitals with trauma centers, deliver timely care to children and adults with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI).

Common traumatic brain injury symptoms may include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Confusion
  • Balance problems
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling tired, having no energy
  • Fuzzy or blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Sensitivity to noise or light

Spinal cord injury symptoms may vary -- from having partial movement, to being unable to move your arms or legs or having loss of sensation. The symptoms of a spinal cord contusion, or severe spinal cord injury, include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Electric-shock like sensations
  • Burning in the arms or legs
  • Weakness in the legs
  • Bowel or Bladder incontinence
